Kasbah of the Udayas

UNESCO FORTRESS

The Kasbah of the Udayas is Rabat's oldest inhabited quarter — an Almohad fortress built in the 12th century on the cliff where the Bou Regreg meets the Atlantic. Inside the ramparts, a tiny residential medina of whitewashed houses, blue-painted doorways, and narrow stepped lanes rolls down toward the ocean. The monumental Bab Oudaia gate, the Andalusian Gardens, and a café terrace looking over the estuary to Salé are all part of the UNESCO-listed historic ensemble of Rabat, inscribed in 2012.
