How long should I plan?

Budget 75 to 90 minutes. Longer if you want to sit in the ruins, photograph the storks, or eat a small picnic on the benches near the sacred pool.

Are there guides at the entrance?

Yes — licensed guides wait near the gate for around 150 MAD for a 45-minute tour. Information panels in French and Arabic are patchy, so a guide is worth it for a first visit.

Is the site step-heavy?

Yes. The whole site is on a steep hillside with stone steps, uneven Roman paving, and narrow passages. Sturdy shoes and a slow pace help.

Chellah is the most atmospheric monument in Rabat. A walled site on a hillside south of the modern city, it holds the ruins of Sala Colonia — a Roman port founded in the 1st century CE — beneath the tombs, minaret, and gardens of a 14th-century Merinid royal necropolis. White storks nest on every tower, frogs sound in the sacred pool, and the whole enclosure feels part archaeological park, part overgrown garden. Part of the UNESCO historic ensemble of Rabat inscribed in 2012.
