Jemaa el-Fnaa
UNESCO-listed square at the heart of Marrakech medina
Jemaa el-Fnaa is the central square of Marrakech medina, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2001. By day it draws orange-juice carts, snake charmers and water sellers; after sunset it transforms into an open-air food court of dozens of stalls, storytellers, musicians and dancers.

The most widely accepted interpretation is 'the ruined mosque', referring to an unfinished Friday mosque planned by Saadian sultan Ahmad al-Mansur (r. 1578–1603). 'Jamaa' means congregation or mosque; 'fna' can mean death, extinction or open area.
