Grand taxi from Meknes is the standard — around 400–500 MAD for a day-hire that does Volubilis and the nearby holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Negotiate at Institut Français or Place el Hedim taxi stands.

Do I need a Volubilis guide?

Strongly recommended. The site is sprawling and most of the information is unmarked. Licensed guides at the entrance charge 200–300 MAD for a two-hour English or French tour.

Alternatives if one day is too tight?

Meknes is the easiest of Morocco's imperial cities to see in a day from Rabat — 90 minutes by train to Meknes Amir Abdelkader, a compact medina, and Moulay Ismail's monumental gates all walkable from the station. Thirty kilometres further north lie the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco and a second UNESCO site. A day-hire taxi from Meknes (400–500 MAD) adds Volubilis to the Meknes walk comfortably.

Yes, but it's long. Take the 07:30 train out of Rabat, walk Meknes in the morning, taxi to Volubilis at 13:00, spend two hours there, back in Meknes for 17:00, train to Rabat for 20:30. Lots of movement — some travellers split it into two days with a Meknes overnight.
