How far is Ifrane National Park from Fez?

The park sits in the Middle Atlas south of Fez, around the towns of Ifrane and Azrou. It is the standard day trip out of Fez into the mountains, and the drive climbs to between 1,300 and 2,400 metres.

Is it right to feed the Barbary macaques?

No. The Barbary macaque is an endangered species and feeding changes its diet and behaviour and pushes troops onto the roads. Watch from a distance and take your rubbish away with you.

Middle Atlas cedar forest and its Barbary macaques

Ifrane National Park protects 125,000 hectares of the western Middle Atlas across the provinces of Ifrane and Boulemane, between 1,300 and 2,400 metres altitude. Conceived in 1994 and established in October 2004, it was enlarged from its original 53,800 hectares in April 2008. The park contains one tenth of the world's Atlas cedar and about one quarter of the world's population of the endangered Barbary macaque, alongside 1,015 plant species including evergreen oak, maritime pine and Spanish juniper. The cedar groves near Azrou are the easiest place to see the macaques.
