How do I avoid the smell?

Shopkeepers hand visitors a sprig of fresh mint at the entrance — hold it under your nose. The dye-and-pigeon-droppings smell is intense, especially in summer.

Which terrace has the best view?

Shops at No. 10 and No. 64 on Derb Chouara are widely cited as the best vantage points. Higher floors give wider panoramas of the colour-filled stone pits below.

The largest of the three working tanneries in Fes el-Bali, Chouara has been processing hides in stone pits beside the Oued Fes since at least the 11th century. Visitors view the dye vats from rooftop leather shops on Derb Chouara — entry is officially free but a tip is expected.
