Things to Do in Ouarzazate: Film Studios, Kasbahs & Quad Biking (2026)

Morocco's film capital packs UNESCO kasbahs, world-famous studios and pre-Saharan quad trails into one compact base. Here are the 7 best things to do in Ouarzazate.

Ouarzazate, known as the "door of the desert", sits on a pre-Saharan plateau where the High Atlas mountains give way to the Draa Valley. It is Morocco's film capital — Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones were all shot here — and the best base for exploring earthen kasbahs, palm oases and desert trails. Here are the seven best things to do in and around the city.

1. Quad biking across the pre-Saharan plateau

A guided quad ride is the fastest way to see the landscapes that made Ouarzazate famous. Quad biking in Ouarzazate is a 60- to 90-minute off-road ride crossing palm groves, dry river beds and oases, with routes running toward Aït Benhaddou, Atlas Studios and the Draa Valley. Helmets and goggles are provided and beginners are welcome. Tours start from 300 MAD per person, and the light is best at sunrise or late afternoon. Reservation is free — you pay on arrival.

2. Aït Benhaddou, the most famous ksar in Morocco

Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village about 30 km northwest of Ouarzazate, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and fortified since the 11th century. Its rammed-earth and adobe towers have appeared in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Climb to the granary at the top for a view over the Ounila river valley.

3. Atlas Film Studios

Founded in 1983 by Mohamed Belghmi, Atlas Film Studios lies about 5 km west of the city and ranks among the world's largest film studios by area. Guided tours walk you through standing sets from Gladiator, The Mummy, Game of Thrones and Vikings.

4. The Cinema Museum

Opened in 2007 in a former film studio, the Ouarzazate Cinema Museum sits on Avenue Mohammed V directly opposite Kasbah Taourirt. Inside you wander through film sets, props and vintage camera equipment from decades of productions shot in the region.

5. Kasbah Taourirt

Kasbah Taourirt is a 19th-century Glaoui kasbah in the centre of town, one of Morocco's finest examples of rammed-earth (pisé) architecture. Its maze of decorated rooms and the artisan complex across the street make it an easy half-day combined with the Cinema Museum.

6. Fint Oasis

About 12 km south of the city, Fint Oasis — "fint" means "hidden" in the Amazigh language — is a palm oasis wrapped around four small villages between dark desert mountains. Film crews used it for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Babel. Note that the last stretch of the access road is unpaved.

7. Tifoultoute Kasbah

Perched on a hilltop about 8 km west of Ouarzazate, Tifoultoute Kasbah is linked to Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakech from 1912 to 1956. The mudbrick fortress rewards the short detour with panoramic views over the river valley.

When to go and how to combine it all

Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather; in summer, plan quad rides and kasbah visits for early morning or late afternoon. A classic day pairs a morning quad tour with an afternoon at Aït Benhaddou and sunset at Tifoultoute.
