Tangier Medina

The walled old town between the Grand Socco and Petit Socco

Chat with us
The Tangier Medina is the city's walled old town, a maze of white-washed lanes climbing from the Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947) up to the kasbah. Its two historic squares, the Grand Socco and the smaller Petit Socco, have long been the meeting point of the medina and the newer city, ringed by cafés, mosques and souks.

FAQs

The Grand Socco is a large roundabout square that separates the Tangier medina from the newer downtown. Its official name is Place du 9 Avril 1947, commemorating Sultan Mohammed V's independence speech given there on that date. Rebuilt in 2005, it now has a marble fountain, palm trees and benches, and an archway leading into the Mendoubia Gardens.
