Cap Spartel is the northwestern tip of Africa, about 12 km west of Tangier, marking the point where Atlantic and Mediterranean waters meet at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Its cliff-top lighthouse, built by Sultan Muhammad IV in 1864, still guides ships and its longitude is recognised as the western limit of the Mediterranean. The promontory rises to over 300 metres and the Caves of Hercules lie just below.
