When was Dar el Makhzen built?

Dar el Makhzen was built in the early 18th century, in the era of Sultan Moulay Ismail, on one of the highest points of the Kasbah. It was converted into a museum in 1922 and comprehensively renovated in the early 2010s, reopening in 2016.

How do you get to the Kasbah of Tangier?

The Kasbah sits at the top of the old medina and is reached on foot. From the Grand Socco or Petit Socco, follow the sloping lanes uphill; cars cannot enter the narrow streets.

The Kasbah is the fortified quarter crowning the highest point of the Tangier medina, a maze of whitewashed lanes overlooking the port and the Strait of Gibraltar. At its heart stands Dar el Makhzen, the former sultan's palace built in the early 18th century, which since 1922 has housed the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures. Its two courtyards with marble fountains and arabesques display Moroccan crafts and antiquities from Roman sites such as Volubilis and Lixus.
