Place El Hedim is the great public square at the heart of the Meknes medina, stretching between the old city and Moulay Ismail's imperial kasbah. Its name means "the rubble," a reference to the debris piled here when the sultan demolished houses in the late 17th century to open a monumental approach to his palace. Today it is a lively gathering place lined with cafés and stalls, framed by the monumental Bab Mansour gate to the south and the Dar Jamai Museum to the north. In the evenings it fills with musicians, food vendors and families, often compared to Marrakesh's Jemaa el-Fnaa.
