Atlantic coastal park protecting the northern bald ibis
Souss-Massa National Park stretches along ~330 km² of Atlantic coast between the Oued Souss and Oued Massa estuaries, south of Agadir. Established in 1991, it shelters roughly 95% of the world population of the critically endangered northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita) across colonies between Massa and Tamri.
What to expect
- Two birding hubs: the Oued Souss estuary at the park's northern edge, just south of Agadir, and the larger Oued Massa estuary and lagoon further south, where the visitor centre sits and bald ibis colonies are most accessible.
Best time
- March, April and October are the peak birding months. Plan dawn or dusk visits for the best ibis activity and softer light along the estuary.
How to combine
- Pair the park with a drive down to Sidi Ifni or Tiznit. From Agadir it works as a long half-day if you focus on the Oued Massa visitor centre, or a full day combined with Sidi Rbat.

The Rokein Reserve in the northern section of the park, ideally at dawn or late afternoon. Local rangers and guided tours improve the chances significantly — the birds nest on cliffs and feed in nearby farmland.
