Imlili Sebkha (Sebkhat Imlili)
Desert saltmarsh with relict fish, a Ramsar wetland
Sebkhat Imlili is a remarkable relict wetland in the Atlantic Sahara, roughly 50 km south of Dakhla and around 15 km from the coast. This elongated salt flat holds more than 160 permanent pockets of hypersaline water that shelter a relict population of Guinea tilapia (Coptodon guineensis) – tropical fish surviving as living witnesses of the region's wetter past. Classified as a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2018, it is a scientifically important refuge for specialised aquatic life, endemic reptiles and migratory birds crossing the Sahara.

DakhlaFAQs
It is a relict Saharan wetland where more than 160 permanent pockets of hypersaline water shelter a surviving population of tropical Guinea tilapia in the middle of the desert. This makes it a rare living witness of the region's much wetter past.
