Riad Dar Saba, also known as Saba's House, sits on Rue Cheikh Mohammed Ben Seddik by Place Amrah, inside the walls of the Kasbah. It is small on purpose: six rooms, each decorated differently, among them suites named for Malcolm Forbes and Barbara Hutton, two of the foreigners whose houses gave this quarter its reputation. The roof terrace is the reason to come. Shaded, it turns 270 degrees over the bay of Tangier, the Kasbah and the medina, and on a clear day across the Strait to Spain. Downstairs there is a lounge with a fireplace, a small library and a piano, and a restaurant cooking Mediterranean. There is a steam room and a sauna, and reception speaks Arabic, French, Spanish, English and Dutch. The Kasbah Museum and the Dar el Makhzen are both within about two hundred metres, which puts you inside the sight rather than near it.

The neighbourhood

The Kasbah is the walled citadel at the top of the medina, quieter and more residential than the souks below it, and largely car free. Expect to arrive on foot through the lanes with your bag, which is the trade for staying inside the walls. The Kasbah Museum in the Dar el Makhzen is a couple of minutes away, the Grand Socco and the Ville Nouvelle are downhill to the south, and the port and the beach lie below to the east.
