The Tazi Palace was built in 1926 as the residence of Ahmad Tazi, an adviser to the Moroccan court, in the Boubana quarter in the hills west of the city. It has been restored to its 1920s state, with the original decorative work recovered and new craft added by Moroccan artisans, and it reopened as a Fairmont hotel. The grounds are the surprise: a century old eucalyptus forest with palm, olive, citrus and fig, laid out with Andalusian gardens. There are 133 rooms, suites and penthouses, all of them with a balcony or terrace looking at either the city or the forest, and seven restaurants and bars across the estate. The Fairmont Spa uses Swissline and marocMaroc. This is the stay for space and quiet above Tangier, about ten minutes by car from the centre and twenty from the airport.
Boubana is a hillside quarter west of the centre, wooded and residential, overlooking the medina and the bay. There is nothing to walk to, which is the point: the estate is the destination. The medina, the Kasbah and the Grand Socco are around ten minutes away by car, and Tangier Ibn Battouta airport is roughly twenty minutes.
