Riad Palais Sebban takes its name from Caid Sebban, a former owner whose family kept the house for generations. It grew out of a group of eighteenth century town houses, and its central riad was built in the second half of the nineteenth century for the finance minister of the sultan, who wanted a residence in the style of Fez. The building was restored over four years before it took guests, and it keeps its carved woodwork, painted ceilings and original doors. The rooms open onto several patios rather than one, and there is more than one swimming pool, including one on the roof. There is a spa with a hammam and massages, a restaurant and bar serving Moroccan and Andalusian influenced cooking, and the house runs cooking classes for guests. Choose it if you want a historic house with the space of a small palace and Jemaa el Fna close enough to walk to for dinner.

The neighbourhood

Laksour is one of the oldest residential quarters of the medina, between Jemaa el Fna and the Mouassine souks. Jemaa el Fna is about 350 m away in a straight line and the Koutoubia Mosque is a short walk further. The lanes are narrow, so cars stop at the nearest street and the last stretch is on foot. The property stops noise between 11 pm and 7 am.
