Km 12 Route de Ouarzazate, Marrakech View on map
Amanjena opened in 2000 as Aman's first property in Africa. It was designed by the architect Ed Tuttle, a long standing Aman collaborator, and the plan is built around a bassin, the large open water basin that traditional Moroccan gardens used for irrigation. Guests stay in pavilions under domed roofs, in ochre and rose walls that pick up the colour of the ground around Marrakech. It sits on the Ouarzazate road outside the city rather than in the medina, so it is quiet in a way no riad can be, and the Atlas mountains are the view rather than the rooftops. Choose it when you want Marrakech at arm's length: space, silence and a pool, with the souks a drive away when you want them.
About twelve kilometres out on the Route de Ouarzazate, past the golf courses and well outside the medina. You will want a car or a taxi for everything, which is the trade for the quiet and the mountain views. Allow twenty to thirty minutes into the old city depending on traffic.
