Hyatt Regency Casablanca opened in 1973 and has anchored Place des Nations Unies ever since. The eleven storey block, in yellow and red rather than the white that dominates the city, is a landmark in its own right, and its position is the reason to book it: the gate of the old medina is across the square, and the art deco avenues run away from the other side. The hotel has 255 rooms and suites. Standard rooms are around 37 square metres, and depending on which way they face they look at art deco facades, over the medina rooftops or towards the Hassan II Mosque. Place des Nations Unies is the hinge of central Casablanca. On one side the old medina begins, a walled quarter of small shops and lanes; on the other the art deco boulevards of the Ville Nouvelle lead to Place Mohammed V. The Hassan II Mosque is around 1.5 km northwest, a walk of about twenty minutes along the water. The square itself is busy and traffic heavy day and night.
