Where does the Toubkal trek start?

From Imlil, an Amazigh village about 70 kilometres from Marrakech that serves as the park's main trailhead. Reaching the summit and returning normally takes two days with a night in a mountain refuge.

Do you need a guide for Toubkal?

Almost everyone climbing to the summit hires a certified mountain guide in Imlil. The route is high, exposed and snow-covered for much of the year, and guides also arrange refuge places and mules.

North Africa's highest peak, 70 km from Marrakech

Toubkal National Park was created in 1942, the first national park in Morocco, and covers 380 km² of the High Atlas about 70 kilometres from Marrakech. It is built around Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, and the Amazigh village of Imlil is the usual starting point for the walk in. The park is an Important Bird Area, home to Barbary partridges, Levaillant's woodpeckers, Moussier's redstarts and several warbler species, with cedar oak and juniper woodland in its lower valleys.
