Port of Essaouira & Skala du Port

Working fishing harbour with blue wooden boats and an 18th-century bastion

Chat with us
The Port of Essaouira is one of Morocco's major fishing harbours, famous for the fleet of bright blue wooden boats that land sardines and conger eel each day. At its entrance stands the Skala du Port, an 18th-century fortified bastion with a square tower and bronze cannons overlooking the medina, reached through the Porte de la Marine gate built in 1769.

FAQs

The wooden fishing boats of Essaouira are traditionally painted bright blue, a colour long associated with the town's harbour. Carpenters in the port's small shipyard still build and paint them by hand, and the blue fleet is one of the most photographed sights in the city.
