Jemaa el-Fnaa is the central square of Marrakech medina, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2001. By day it draws orange-juice carts, snake charmers and water sellers; after sunset it transforms into an open-air food court of dozens of stalls, storytellers, musicians and dancers.

L'interprétation la plus largement acceptée est « la mosquée en ruine », faisant référence à une mosquée du vendredi inachevée prévue par le sultan saadien Ahmad al-Mansur (r. 1578-1603). « Jamaa » signifie congrégation ou mosquée ; « fna » peut signifier mort, extinction ou espace ouvert.
